Oscar Basurto, 1951. "My 51 Fleetline from Mexico City"

Since he was a young boy, Oscar Basurto has been fascinated by the cars that his grandfather worked on as a mechanic. He would help when he could, fostering a deep love for vintage cars. Now 35, he is able to put this love towards his 1951 Chevrolet and share it with future generations.

He first found the car eight years ago when his uncle, an auto body mechanic, was going to scrap the vehicle. Oscar convinced him to sell it to him instead, despite his grandfather’s concerns over its condition. Thus began his restoration journey.

Though his grandfather was initially concerned, he came around and helped quite a bit with the process. They began with the mechanical aspects, focusing on the brakes and suspension. After that, they worked on the engine until the car began to run. He also began working with his uncle to figure out the interior, planning out the car’s color and the upholstery. Oscar noted that, “Throughout those eight years I have tried to make it the best possible, and it’s very satisfying work that is continual.”

Oscar was dedicated to keeping the vehicle as original as possible, often waiting long periods to find original parts when only modern pieces were available. The only thing modern added were seat warmers. His favorite parts are found in the engine, including the carburetor and flywheel.

What does he think about having won our Customer Vehicle of the Month Contest? “I am very excited to have won…I know that my car has a lot of work left in order to be perfect, but I am very proud of it…my car has a very large sentimental value.” said Oscar. He hasn’t been able to take it to any car shows yet, but he hopes to, and he appreciates being in a community that shares his love for old cars where he can find inspiration for what he can improve on.

Now, he continues to work on his car with the help of his young son, passing on the love for vintage cars to another generation yet. Congratulations again to Oscar Basurto for his amazing vehicle!

Desde que era niño, Oscar Basurto ha sido fascinado con los carros que su abuelo trabaja con como mecánico. Él ayudó cuando pudo, fomentando su amor por los carros antiguos. Ahora, tiene 35 años, y puede usar su amor en su 1951 Chevrolet y compartirlo con las generaciones futuras.

¿Qué piensa sobre ganar nuestro concurso? “Estoy muy emocionado haber ganado ‘October Customer Vehicle of the Month’, sé que a mi carro le falta mucho trabajo para ser perfecto sin embargo me siento muy orgulloso de poder arreglarlo como hasta ahora…mi carro tiene un valor sentimental muy grande.” dijo Oscar. Ahora, no lo ha llevado a alguna exhibición de los carros, pero espera hacerlo, y guste ser parte de una comunidad que tiene el gusto por los carros viejos y donde puede descubrir inspiración por su carro.
